Plasma decomposition of chemical substances that could not be decomposed until now.
■By applying a high-voltage plasma of 20,000 volts, we can make previously impossible difficult decomposition possible. ■Alternating between underwater plasma and atmospheric plasma using a special reactor. ■We will continue to advance verification through measurement of substances other than PFOS and PFOA.

basic information
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are known as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the natural environment and can persist for long periods in the environment and living organisms. PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) are representative substances, and it is known that once they are absorbed by the human body, they remain for a long time. At high concentrations, there are concerns about adverse health effects, including increased risks of kidney cancer and testicular cancer, elevated cholesterol levels, and changes in liver enzymes. Therefore, risks to the environment and human health have been pointed out, and regulation and management are being demanded. Currently, under the Stockholm Convention and the Chemical Substances Control Law, the Ministry of the Environment in Japan designated PFOS and PFOA as substances requiring monitoring for the protection of human health on May 28, 2020, and established a provisional target value (provisional guideline value) of 50 nanograms per liter (50 ng/L, total of PFOS and PFOA) for public water bodies and groundwater. In this context, our company is considering whether there are any exceptional measures that can be allowed for applications where alternatives are difficult, and we are exploring the possibility of using plasma technology (high-voltage pulse systems) to decompose these PFAS to contribute to society.
