Chromium was discovered in the late 1700s. However, it took more than 100 years for stainless steel to be born from that point. By the early 1800s, it was known that adding chromium to iron seemed to improve its corrosion resistance. However, the technology of the time had issues with manufacturing and processing, making it far from practical.
