The Road Surface Condition Detection System RWS10 is a compact system that covers basic road weather measurements. This product is designed as a tool to optimize winter road maintenance, achieving performance equivalent to previous road condition meters while enabling low-cost production. The device can be installed on existing poles along the road, allowing for real-time monitoring of road conditions and friction coefficients. Additionally, the installation is straightforward, taking less than an hour if mounted on an existing mast. It measures the thickness of water and ice layers in millimeters, up to a maximum of 5mm, and uses the measured road conditions and the thickness of the water and ice layers to estimate the friction coefficient. The measurement results are sent to a server, and all data can be viewed online. Furthermore, the measurement data can be integrated into other data management systems.

The measured results are sent to the server, and all data can be viewed on the online road surface condition map. The figure below shows the data display screen of the road surface condition map. The displayed parameters indicate the road surface conditions (dry, wet, damp, slush, frost, snow, frozen) using colors. Measurement values such as the friction coefficient are displayed in the graph at the bottom of the screen.

The RCM411R sensor mounted on the RWS10 emits infrared light onto the road surface and measures the reflected light. When the road surface is covered with water or ice, the reflected light will be diminished compared to the calibration value. This is because infrared light is absorbed by water or ice. The degree of signal attenuation depends on the amount of ice or water, allowing for the assessment of road conditions by analyzing the amount of reflection. Snow appears as ice on the spectrum and can be distinguished from hard ice. The analysis of the measurement data is performed by the sensor's microprocessor.
