The energy consumed in the field of buildings in Japan accounts for one-third of the total and is increasing compared to other sectors. This situation necessitates further efforts towards energy conservation and decarbonization in residential and commercial buildings. In the medium term, looking towards 2030, and in the long term, towards 2050, strengthening both hard and soft aspects of residential and commercial buildings is essential for achieving a decarbonized society. This article introduces BELS (Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System), which has been operated since April 2014 as one of the third-party certifications under the Energy Conservation Act for Buildings, based on the guidelines for energy performance labeling of buildings.
