Why can temperature be measured non-contact? An explanation of non-contact temperature sensors using thermopile technology.
(Excerpt) <Introduction> - Why can temperature be measured without contact? All objects emit radiant energy based on absolute temperature, and by measuring this radiant energy, it is possible to measure temperature without contact. Radiant energy has no wavelength dependence and has the property of being absorbed by black objects. When an object absorbs energy, its temperature rises. By measuring this temperature rise, it is equivalent to measuring the temperature of the object itself. The thermopile element introduced here is a type of thermocouple. Non-contact thermometers (sensors) that utilize thermopiles are also referred to as "radiation thermometers (sensors)."
