Introduction of amine analyzers for carbon dioxide (CO2) separation, recovery, and absorption applications in the steelmaking sector.

Various steel products are used around us. The steel industry aims for "green steel," which targets decarbonization in steelmaking by utilizing CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage). Technologies are being developed for the separation and absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from B gas (Blast Furnace Gas, which includes CO (carbon monoxide), methane, etc.) emitted from blast furnaces, as well as for direct reduction and recovery. One example is the use of amine solutions formed from amines to facilitate the separation and recovery of CO2. An amine analyzer is used to perform mass spectrometry of amines in industrial exhaust gases. Our amine analyzer (Process Insights' Hydrocarbon Analyzer (HC/Hydrocarbon Analyser), formerly from Applied Instrumentation/Schneider) is a measuring instrument that employs Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). By using infrared light to irradiate the sample, it enables rapid and highly accurate quantitative and qualitative evaluation of substances.

In addition to FT-IR, amines can be measured using a hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID), proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS), but most of these are laboratory instruments used in research institutes and universities. For actual measurement sites, FTIR is the most suitable as a high-response concentration meter. These instruments were compared at the Mongstand Technology Center in Norway, confirming the superiority of FTIR.
