Methane fermentation wastewater treatment is a method of wastewater treatment that utilizes microorganisms (anaerobic bacteria) that thrive in environments with little to no oxygen. Since aeration, which supplies air to the treatment tank, is unnecessary, it can significantly reduce power consumption. Additionally, this process converts the pollutants (organic matter) in the wastewater into methane gas. The generated methane gas has the same components as city gas, and by using it as fuel for boilers and generators, it can reduce the use of conventional fuels (fossil fuels). Furthermore, due to the slow growth of microorganisms, the amount of excess sludge generated is also low, allowing for simultaneous waste reduction. These features not only reduce the running costs associated with wastewater treatment but also contribute to CO2 reduction. The reduction of fuel corresponds to Scope 1, the reduction of electricity corresponds to Scope 2, and the reduction of waste corresponds to Scope 3, making it a technology that is rapidly spreading as a means of achieving decarbonization in factories. Methane fermentation wastewater treatment has the advantage of generating energy from wastewater and consuming less power, making it a technology that can contribute to cost reduction as well as decarbonization. However, traditionally, only certain types of wastewater, such as those from sugar production and alcohol, were treated. "Tokutoku-bububu" has significantly expanded the application range of methane fermentation wastewater treatment, making it applicable to most food wastewater. By implementing this system, it is possible to generate electricity from methane gas obtained from wastewater while significantly reducing the power consumption associated with wastewater treatment, thereby lowering running costs and contributing to decarbonization at the same time.

Applications/Examples of results
Most organic wastewater from food factories and some chemical plants is targeted. It can also be applied to wastewater containing oils, which traditional methane fermentation has struggled with. There are many industries with a track record of implementation, including soybean products, dairy products, Western confections, seasonings, fruit juices, and seafood processing. The gas generated is often used as boiler fuel within the factory, but there are also examples of operating generators and selling the produced electricity as renewable energy, providing a system that generates profit from wastewater, which has not existed before.
