Biochar refers to the solid (charcoal) obtained from biomass such as wood through pyrolysis in an environment with low oxygen (O2). The soil retention period of the carbon (C) contained in biochar is considered to be between 100 years and several thousand years, depending on factors such as the temperature during pyrolysis. Generally, the carbon fixation period for planted trees is said to be about 60 years. Burying biochar in agricultural land allows the carbon that plants have absorbed from the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2) through photosynthesis to be sequestered from the atmosphere for a longer period.
