It was difficult to use "Abemaki," which had been left in the satoyama as building materials or woodworking products, so we created a new material from it and finished it into an attractive counter.
■What is Abemaki? Abemaki is a broadleaf tree of the beech family, Quercus, that grows abundantly in the satoyama (traditional rural landscapes) of Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture. It was once used for firewood and has properties that make it hard, heavy, and prone to warping in dimensions and cross-sections, making it difficult to use as building material or in woodworking products, leading to it being left in the satoyama. ■Using the good quality parts of Abemaki as surface material We processed the few good quality parts into laminated wood and created veneer (thinly sliced wood). We bonded Abemaki veneer to a core made of cedar laminated wood from Gifu Prefecture. ■Abemaki × Cedar: A new material that compensates for each other's shortcomings Cedar is a lightweight, soft, durable, and easy-to-handle material, but its softness makes it prone to scratches. By applying the hard Abemaki veneer, we created a new material that combines lightness with resistance to scratches. <Features> ◆Natural wood from Gifu Prefecture ◆Unique wood grain ◆Lightweight and resistant to scratches *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
