The fluid analysis I am considering here is as follows: 1) It targets Newtonian fluids. While it is possible to address non-Newtonian fluids, it is limited to those for which viscosity can be modeled. 2) The Navier-Stokes equations will be approximated for analysis. The effects of the viscous and pressure terms will be taken into account. (This is an analysis based on lubrication theory.) 3) It will be provided as an Excel spreadsheet. By inputting values into the spreadsheet, flow rate and coating thickness will be calculated. It can also calculate the tension of the fluid acting on the workpiece and the pressure generated within the die. This analytical method was utilized in the design of coating dies for optical fibers. At that time, we were coating at speeds of over 1000m/min. Currently, we are coating at even higher speeds. The material used is UV-curable resin, but this analytical method can also be applied to other resins. For example, it can be applied to the design of extrusion dies (the die section of crossheads). We also applied this analysis to the design of dies for coating tape substrates. The flow of the coating fluid when the substrate is moving is governed by the flow field generated by the movement of the substrate and the flow field caused by the pressure from the wedge shape.
