It is a floor-standing movable calorimeter for safely testing the thermal, electrical, and mechanical stress of large battery cells and small modules.
The evaluation of these tests facilitates the assessment of the safety performance of battery cells, enables the definition of the safe operating limits of batteries, and makes it easier to research and develop the mechanisms of thermal runaway and thermal propagation. Options for capturing footage of battery explosions, nail penetration tests, temperature mapping of samples, and gas release sampling are available. This is a large-scale device capable of testing batteries for EV/HEV and aircraft. It is equipped with a container to hold fragments and smoke during sample explosions, an automatic safety valve, and an emergency cooling safety mechanism that automatically stops. To avoid the risks of thermal runaway and the potentially catastrophic consequences it may bring, it is essential to identify the safe operating limits of battery cells, modules, and packs. Therefore, batteries must be subjected to mechanical, electrical, and thermal stress to define safe operating limits. Thermal stability data from thermal stress tests helps define the safe operating temperature of the battery. Evaluating overcharging and discharge rates allows for the determination of maximum safe voltage and maximum safe current. The effects of mechanical stress and external short circuits (ESC) can be assessed.
