The grades of American hardwood are divided into three categories, each with different primary uses. <FAS> Boards that are 6 inches or wider and 8 feet or longer, with a yield of clear material to surface ranging from 83 1/3% (10/12) to 100%. The minimum dimensions are at least 3 inches by 7 feet or 4 inches by 5 feet of clear material. FAS grade material must meet the minimum requirements on both surfaces. Uses: high-end furniture, cabinetry, solid wood molding. <No. 1 Common> Commonly referred to as cabinet grade in the U.S. because it is easy to use for standard-sized kitchen cabinet doors that are widely available across the country. The minimum dimensions are 3 inches by 4 feet, with a yield of clear material ranging from 66 2/3% to below the lower limit of 83 1/3% for FAS. The minimum clear material dimensions are at least 3 inches by 3 feet or 4 inches by 2 feet. Uses: kitchen cabinet doors, furniture crafts. <No. 2A Common> Also known as economy grade due to its versatility for various uses as furniture components and its lower price. The minimum dimensions for No. 2A Common are 3 inches by 4 feet, with a yield of clear material ranging from 50% (6/12) to below the lower limit of 66 2/3% for No. 1 Common. The minimum dimensions for clear material are 3 inches by 2 feet. Uses: flooring, laminated wood.
