Visit the manufacturer of Japan's plaster and introduce the manufacturing process that has inherited timeless techniques and wisdom.
Lime, glue, and straw are 100% natural materials that have been cultivated through unique techniques since the Edo period to create plaster. The unchanging method of plaster and the evolving ideas behind it. Utilizing the techniques and culture passed down to the present, the MYKE brand's "JAPAN Plaster" is a custom product tailored for modern architecture. We spoke with a manufacturing company in Tochigi Prefecture responsible for production about the research involved from limestone mining to manufacturing. In the first part, we will introduce the process from mining to burning lime in the kiln. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Japan plaster comes from one of the highest quality limestone strata in Japan, formed from the accumulation of corals and other materials in the ocean about 250 million years ago. The production of plaster utilizing the characteristics of the land began long ago. It is said that in the early days of the company, they often sold plaster for construction to Edo. Japanese plaster, believed to have been established during the Asuka period, is beautifully white, excels in fire and moisture resistance, and is durable, making it widely used in shrines, temples, and castles. Today, it is a representative building material of Japan, used in major structures such as Tokyo Station.

Detailed information
-
One of the raw materials for plaster, limestone is said to be the only natural resource that can be self-supplied in Japan. Here, limestone is mined from our own quarry. The mining operation is the foundation of lime production, and shipping high-quality lime leads to the manufacturing of high-quality plaster.
-
The next process involves "calcination," where the mined limestone is burned in a kiln. The lime used for plaster is produced using a traditional method called "salt roasting." By placing limestone, coke, and a small amount of salt in the furnace and continuing to heat it for 3-4 days, the crystals of quicklime grow, and the impurities in the limestone volatilize, resulting in high-quality lime that becomes a stronger and whiter base for plaster.
-
Currently, only a few companies nationwide are producing lime by roasting it with salt. The traditional method, which has been passed down since the Edo period, is maintained by the strong will of the artisans.
