Source rock refers to the type of rock that can generate oil. Source rock is one element of the petroleum system, and without source rock, oil and gas fields cannot exist. The capacity of source rock is primarily evaluated based on three factors: the amount of organic matter, the type of organic matter, and the maturity level. Each of these is assessed using instruments such as elemental analyzers, Rock Eval analysis devices, and microscopes for measuring vitrinite reflectance, using samples collected from the surface or cuttings obtained from wells, and these evaluations serve as fundamental data for oil and gas exploration.
