Aldehydes with a high carbon number generally have an extremely low olfactory threshold (the minimum concentration of odor that can be detected by humans), so even a trace amount remaining in the gas being treated tends to result in a very high odor concentration (the dilution factor at which an odorous gas is diluted with odorless air until the smell is no longer detectable).
