Hollow fiber membranes are made of polyethylene in a straw-like shape and filter wastewater through micron-sized holes. The diameter of a single fiber is 270 microns, and the diameter of the holes for separation filtration is extremely small at 0.1 microns, completely shutting out microorganisms such as colloids and E. coli.
