Radiated emission testing is typically conducted in an anechoic chamber using antennas to pick up radio waves. Due to bandwidth limitations, several antennas are required to cover the full frequency range, and a larger space may also be necessary. Before compliance testing, an affordable lab set up to measure radiated emissions in-house is needed, but the TEM cell is suitable equipment for desktop testing of radiated emissions, serving as a stripline device for radiated emission and immunity testing of electronic devices. Its size and cost provide a convenient alternative to measurements in an anechoic chamber. The TEM cell consists of a septum, a central conductive strip, and walls connected to ground. Its shape is designed to present a 50Ω stripline. The device under test (DUT) is placed between the bottom wall and the septum. The "open TEM cell" has no side walls for easy placement of the DUT. While it may pick up RF background noise, this can be accounted for by measuring the cell output signal before powering on the DUT.
