Sparrows are about 15 cm long and are sexually monomorphic. They can be found throughout almost all of Japan, but not in the Ogasawara Islands. They have a wide distribution around the world, primarily centered on the Eurasian continent, and are commonly seen in human habitats, from grasslands and agricultural areas to urban environments, making them birds that are closely associated with humans. Their diet is omnivorous, primarily consisting of seeds from grasses and insects. Urban sparrows eat everything from organic waste to snack crumbs. They are considered pests because they consume grains, and farmers have viewed them as enemies; however, during the breeding season, they help reduce pests by preying on insects and also eat weed seeds, contributing to agriculture. In China, a plan was implemented in 1955 to eradicate sparrows along with rats, flies, and mosquitoes, resulting in the capture of over 1.1 billion sparrows in a year. However, this led to an increase in pests and nationwide crop failures, according to reports. Additionally, they are known to carry harmful bacteria, earning them the nickname "flying rats."
