SA (Saturable Absorber) is a structure formed by creating a saturated absorption layer on a semi-insulating GaAs wafer.
■Both sides of the SA are coated with anti-reflective (AR) coating to match the wavelength of the laser. ■The SA is a nonlinear absorber, and the transmittance increases with the increase in pulse energy. ■The typical saturation fluence of the SA is higher than that of the SAM. ■When the relaxation time is less than 100 ps, the SA returns to the ground state.

■ By using SA, it is possible to achieve a self-oscillating passive mode-locked laser with very stable pulse repetition. ■ SA is available for mode-locking mainly in fiber lasers, covering a wide spectral range from 1030 nm to 2800 nm. ■ It is also possible to easily realize a ring laser. ■ Both free-space optical systems and fiber coupling can be used.
