Cypress is a tree species native to Japan, widely distributed from central Honshu to Yakushima. However, Tono cypress is produced mainly from the forests of the Tono region in Gifu Prefecture and is a nationally recognized brand of cypress. It has a pale pink wood surface that increases in luster over time and a refreshing fragrance, and has been used since ancient times as material for shrines and castles. The plain, unknotted boards are made from a highly valuable part that has no knots (though there may be slight leaf knots).
