"Sugatakata" is a door handle manufacturer that aims to contribute to the creation of beautiful living spaces through the production of unique living art made from wood and fabric, with the concept of "the form of living, the shape of being born." In the residential equipment market, metal door handles are mainstream, but while they are highly durable, they consume a significant amount of electricity and fossil fuels from resource extraction to processing. Consequently, the carbon dioxide emissions are very high, resulting in a substantial environmental burden. For example, when comparing the energy required to produce materials (Mj = megajoule), aluminum and artificially dried hardwood lumber have a ratio of 170 to 2. Compared to metal, the American hardwood primarily used by Sugatakata is sourced from diverse natural forest ecosystems and stores 1.6 kg of carbon dioxide per kg. Furthermore, even when considering all greenhouse gas emissions from logging, lumber processing, artificial drying, and transportation to Japan, the total is only 0.7 kg, resulting in an extremely low environmental impact. Sugatakata aims to promote the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and strive for a sustainable society by replacing door handles, as well as fixtures, furniture, and buildings, with wood once again, using excellent design and technology.
