Sharpen the pencil only on the wooden part, exposing 5 to 6 mm of the core. Set the pencil in the testing device, applying a load of 750g ± 10g on the tip of the pencil core while maintaining an angle of 45° ± 1°, and push it a distance of at least 7 mm at a speed of 0.5 to 1 mm/s. Wipe the pencil core powder from the coating surface with a soft cloth or cotton wool and an inert solvent, and check for scratches or indentations. The hardness of the coating is determined by the softest pencil that did not cause any scratches before the one that did.
