The acoustic power level is used to express the loudness of sound emitted from machines. The acoustic power level represents the total energy emitted by the sound source. If we compare noise levels and acoustic power levels to earthquakes, the noise level corresponds to the intensity at various locations, while the magnitude corresponds to the acoustic power level. Just as the intensity at different locations is not determined solely by the distance from the epicenter but varies depending on the propagation path and ground structure, in the case of sound, the noise level also varies due to the directionality of the sound source and the distance to the measurement position. Therefore, the acoustic power level is used, and particularly in Europe and the United States, it is necessary to specify the acoustic power level of equipment. The measurement methods for acoustic power levels are defined by JIS and ISO, with the measurement principles being the sound pressure method and the acoustic intensity method. The sound pressure method uses semi-anechoic chambers, anechoic chambers, quasi-free sound fields on reflective surfaces, and reverberation rooms as measurement environments.
