1,4-Dioxane is classified as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and discussions are currently underway in the Central Environmental Council's Water Environment Subcommittee to establish discharge standards. 1,4-Dioxane is poorly biodegradable and cannot be removed by biological treatments such as conventional activated sludge treatment, coagulation and sedimentation, or sand filtration. Additionally, adsorption treatment using activated carbon does not have a very high adsorption efficiency. Currently, the advanced oxidation process, which has a proven track record in the decomposition of dioxins, is the most effective treatment method.
