Utilization of lightweight expanded polystyrene (EDO-EPS) blocks as civil engineering materials.
The EDO-EPS construction method involves stacking EDO-EPS blocks as fill material and integrating them with dedicated fastening hardware. This method effectively utilizes the characteristics of EDO-EPS blocks, such as their ultra-lightweight, compressive strength, durability, and self-supporting nature when stacked. It can be applied in areas where there is a need to reduce load and soil pressure, such as on soft ground, landslide areas, embankments on slopes, and backfill for structures. Additionally, since it does not require large construction machinery, it alleviates concerns regarding proximity to important structures and the surrounding environment. Furthermore, it minimizes alterations to the terrain, making it a construction method that significantly contributes to the preservation of the natural environment during route planning and the construction of earth structures in mountainous areas. basic information
**Features** ○ Lightweight → The density of EDO-EPS is about 1/100 that of soil. → Used as a load reduction measure in areas with low ground strength, such as soft ground and landslide-prone areas. ○ Compressibility → The allowable compressive strength of EDO-EPS ranges from 20 to 200 kN/m² depending on the density (type). → Suitable for various applications, including embankments. ○ Self-supporting → When EDO-EPS is stacked upright, a self-supporting surface is formed, and even when a load is applied on top, lateral deformation is minimal. → Significantly reduces earth pressure when installed behind structures. ○ Workability → EDO-EPS is lightweight, making it easy to transport and install manually. → Easy to work in areas inaccessible to large construction machinery or on steep slopes. ○ Economic efficiency → Applicable for embankment work on soft ground: allows for construction of embankments unaffected by the depth of soft ground. → In slope widening embankments, construction is possible with minimal land use. The Expanded Polystyrene Civil Engineering Method Development Organization (EPS Development Organization, EDO) was established in 1986 with the aim of technically establishing and promoting the healthy development of ultra-lightweight embankment construction using expanded polystyrene (EDO-EPS method). To date, it has conducted comprehensive research in collaboration with research institutions from industry, government, and academia on material properties, design and construction methods, seismic design technology, and more, compiling the design and construction system of the method into a "Design and Construction Standards (Draft)" document.
