The amount of water drawn into the pump is small, while the oil can be collected precisely. The condition for suction is that the water is relatively still, with a flow rate of about 0.1 m/s (0.2 knots), but if the flow is fast, it is possible to reduce the surface water flow rate partially by deploying oil booms, allowing for suction.
