The Ogasawara Islands are a rare nesting site for green sea turtles from a genetic perspective.
In the Ogasawara Islands, green sea turtles are cherished as a source of meat. The capture of green sea turtles has been carried out in earnest since the late 1800s, when Japanese immigration began, and currently, about 100 turtles are captured annually, mainly around the Mukojima Islands, under the authorization of the Tokyo Metropolitan Fisheries Adjustment Regulations. Efforts to increase the population of green sea turtles have been underway since early on (1910), but these efforts have not succeeded in restoring their numbers, which had significantly decreased at one point.

Applications/Examples of results
We purchase female parent turtles captured for consumption from fishermen and allow them to lay eggs at the facilities of the Ogasawara Marine Center (Ogasawara Branch) for egg collection. The collected eggs are artificially incubated under controlled conditions, and the hatchlings are released. The "artificial hatching and release" program in Ogasawara began in 1974 as a project of the Ogasawara Fisheries Center and has since been continued for about 30 years at the Ogasawara Marine Center.

This organization was established in August 1999 with the aim of conserving marine life in the Asian region and the surrounding marine environment. Initially, it functioned solely as the domestic liaison for Yayasan Penyu Laut Indonesia - Pusat Penelitian Penyu Indonesia (Indonesian Sea Turtle Research Center), a local NGO in Indonesia. However, in July 2002, it received certification as a non-profit organization (NPO) and, with its incorporation, began substantial activities in the field. The organization is referred to by the abbreviated name ELNA, which stands for Everlasting Nature of Asia.
