Lubrication under high load conditions, reducing initial wear!
Molybdenum disulfide, as indicated by its formula MoS2, has a structure where a molybdenum atom (Mo) is sandwiched between two sulfur atoms (S). While Mo and S are strongly bonded, the S molecules overlap with very weak bonds, creating a slippery structure. It is often compared to a deck of cards that collapses under a weak force. Because of this structure, it is very slippery, yet it has a strong resistance to pressure, which is utilized in many lubricants.
