Once, the foundry industry was a sacred profession. Those involved were called "O-Ichimonshi," and records indicate that they were granted various privileges by the local lords. Before casting large metal works such as temple bells, religious ceremonies were held, and the master foundrymen attended in formal attire. Such customs, which continued from the Middle Ages until the third year of the Meiji era, have, of course, not survived in modern society.
