Are we giving up? The challenges left by the red yeast rice incident on the path to functional food labeling (December 3, 2024)

The functional food labeling system, which started in 2015, is designed to allow small and medium-sized enterprises to easily enter the market. It began with a market size of about 30 billion yen in that fiscal year and has grown to approximately 600 billion yen by the 2023 fiscal year, expanding twentyfold. However, consumer awareness remains around 25%. Functional foods present a significant opportunity for companies, but creating a hit product requires a clear vision, strong belief, and practical skills to overcome challenges. In this seminar, based on years of experience in functional food development, we will introduce the basics of functional food labeling, discuss the timeline of the "red yeast rice incident" that made headlines, and explain the shortcomings of the system and future developments.
