Our company utilizes abandoned farmland to cultivate moss plants. This moss is used as a greening material for green roofs and wall greening as a measure to mitigate urban heat island effects and global warming caused by increased carbon dioxide. Moss plants are resilient to drought and do not require soil, making them a lightweight (thin-layer) greening material that can be managed with minimal effort. This characteristic allows for greening of existing buildings without being subject to weight restrictions, and if placed in areas exposed to rainwater, irrigation is unnecessary. As a result, it is possible to green the rooftops, roofs, and walls of existing buildings where greening has been slow to progress. In urban areas, the number of public organizations establishing greening regulations is increasing, and the expansion of greening projects is expected (following Tokyo and Hyogo, Osaka and Kyoto will make it mandatory). As for government trends, as part of environmental measures based on the Kyoto Protocol for preventing global warming and reducing CO2, initiatives are being promoted to green government buildings, strengthen research, regulations, and guidance on greening, and enhance subsidy and support systems.
