In 1968, Temple University Skin and Cancer Hospital obtained hairless mice from Sandra Biological Supply and created the Skh:HR strain by crossing them with CBA mice. This strain exhibited various coat colors. In 1987, Hoshino Laboratory Animal Breeding Co., Ltd. selected only the albino mice from the Skh:HR strain, which was maintained in a closed colony, and further produced and supplied them as Hos:HR-1 under SPF conditions.

This is a model animal established through selective breeding from Long-Evans rats purchased from Charles River Canada in 1982. It develops diabetes accompanied by obesity and diabetic complications, particularly nephropathy. It was previously sold exclusively to academic institutions (universities and non-profit organizations) through Japan SLC, Inc. and its distributors, but general sales began on January 1, 2017.
