The "Pier Damper Method" is a technique that improves the seismic performance of bridge piers by installing a damping device between the pier and the footing to absorb seismic energy. By selecting the yielding axial force of the damper, the increase in the pier's load-bearing capacity can be controlled. Compared to conventional methods, this approach significantly enhances energy absorption capability, allowing for a reduction in the additional load from pier reinforcement and minimizing the need for foundation strengthening. The "J-UP Brace" demonstrates excellent performance as a seismic damper installed between the superstructure and substructure (piers and abutments) of a bridge. It shows stable restoring force even in high strain areas (maximum shear strain amplitude of 4%) and has outstanding low-cycle fatigue performance, accommodating the large expansion and contraction required for bridge seismic dampers (80 to 120 mm).
