The origin of Awaji tiles, a specialty industry of Hyogo Prefecture and a key industry of Awaji Island, is said to have begun about 400 years ago. It formed as a production area during the Meiji period and has continued to this day. Particularly after the post-war recovery, it has continued to develop supported by strong demand as society transitioned to an industrialized one.
