The "tungsten radiation shielding fabric," processed into smooth fibers using Toho Metal's technology and woven with the cooperation of a fiber manufacturer, possesses shielding capabilities equivalent to existing shielding materials while being lightweight and highly flexible. It is expected to be developed for use in protective clothing at nuclear power plants and as a new shielding material in the medical field. 【Features】 ○ γ-ray shielding rate of 10.7% ○ By layering the fabric or combining it with tungsten plates (0.1mm), shielding of over 25% is also possible. ○ Successful development as a new shielding material that is lightweight and highly flexible by turning it into fabric. ○ When this shielding fabric is used in protective clothing worn by humans, it can significantly reduce the burden on workers compared to the heavy and cumbersome shielding materials used previously. Tungsten radiation shielding fabric has successfully been commercialized as a 100% tungsten fabric by using tungsten in a fibrous form. Additionally, the shielding effect has shown an average shielding rate of over 20% (note) by layering 10 sheets of fabric and stacking four 0.1mm tungsten plates. It is entirely possible to further increase the shielding rate by changing the number of layers and limiting the areas to be shielded. Furthermore, it can be finished in a fabric form, and we are currently considering its installation inside helmets, although it can also be applied to other objects. It is effective not only against gamma rays but also against X-rays, so there is potential for development in the medical field in response to the shift away from lead. (Note) The shielding rate was measured at the Cobalt-60 gamma ray irradiation facility at Nagoya University, and the shielding rate may vary depending on the measurement location and usage conditions, so this result is not guaranteed.
