Buildings constructed after June 1, 1981, under the "New Seismic Design Method," are designed to include seismic slits to prevent "shear failure due to short columns." For buildings constructed before that date that require seismic retrofitting, options include brace reinforcement and cutter work. To prevent major earthquake disasters, we encourage you to consider this as one of the safety measures for existing buildings.
