Explaining the difference between "4-sided box" and "column" used in timber materials.
Explanation of the 4-sided box, differences from columns, and compatibility.
In steel frame (S) construction, the column material is primarily large-diameter square steel pipes known as "columns." However, there is a size limit, with a maximum manufacturing size of 1000mm. For super high-rise buildings that require larger sizes, a "four-sided box," also known as a welded four-sided box or box column, is used. In Japan, column materials for construction structures predominantly use columns, whereas in Taiwan, four-sided boxes are more common. Like Japan, Taiwan experiences frequent earthquakes and requires high strength, but there are fewer column manufacturers, and there are steel manufacturers that produce thick plates, which likely leads to a greater use of four-sided boxes. *For more detailed information about columns, please refer to the PDF materials.*
