When selecting column materials for architectural structures, the first thing to know is the types of square steel pipes. They can be broadly classified into small diameter, medium diameter, and large diameter, with large diameter square steel pipes primarily used for construction purposes. Small diameter square steel pipes, referred to as "small square" or "small square pipes," are used for furniture, decorative materials, and machine parts. Each manufacturer shapes round pipes according to the JIS standard STKM (JIS G 3455) into square shapes and sells them under their own standards. Medium diameter square steel pipes are called "medium diameter square" or "medium diameter square pipes," and are labeled as "general structural square steel pipes." They are used for small-scale architectural structures, structural components of machines, multi-story parking lots, and temporary materials, primarily utilizing the JIS standard STKR (JIS G 3466). Large diameter square steel pipes are generally referred to as "large diameter square steel pipes" or "columns," and are labeled as "architectural structural square steel pipes."
