Introduction to the contact thermal resistance of pipe and piping outer wrap folding fins!

In this column, we report excerpts from the results of collaborative research conducted with a professor from Mie University regarding the contact thermal resistance during the installation of externally wrapped folding fins on pipes. In this collaborative research, a heater was inserted into the center of a copper cylinder, and experiments were conducted under natural convection conditions with fins wrapped around it. By measuring various points, we evaluated the effectiveness of the fins, comparisons based on the method of securing the fins, and the effects of thermal conductive sheets. We received an inquiry stating, "We are having trouble because the cooling of the fluid in the pipes is not keeping up." As a solution, please consider "wrapping folding fins around the pipes." By installing fins, we can effectively increase the actual surface area of the pipes, which can significantly improve cooling efficiency, especially in environments with forced air cooling where wind is present. The wrapping of folding fins can be installed later onto the pipes without replacing the pipes themselves, similar to pipes with fins, which offers the advantage of being able to add components when cooling capacity is insufficient.
