This document explains the "preload" of bearings. When two bearings capable of receiving axial loads are installed as a pair, and a predetermined axial load F (preload) is always applied, this is referred to as applying preload. Bearings have internal clearances, but by applying preload, this clearance is eliminated, and the balls and raceways make elastic contact. As a result, the bearing is free from play due to clearance, which reduces vibrations and noise during rotation, and also increases the rigidity of the bearing.
