Regarding substrate preparation using power tools【SSPC SP-3】.

"SSPC SP-3" SSPC is a non-profit organization in the United States that specializes in coatings for the protection of industrial and marine structures. It is one of the standards established for surface preparation. Surface treatment is performed using power tools such as sanders, wire brushes, chipping hammers, and needle guns. Harmful substances such as loosely adhered rust, mill scale, and paint films on the surface are removed, but firmly adhered rust, mill scale, and paint films are allowed. Visual inspection is conducted. [Summary of SSPC Standards] https://www.nc-net.or.jp/company/98405/product/detail/208826 "Benefits of Using SSPC SP-3" SSPC SP-3 is the standard for surface preparation when using power tools. Since blasting requires equipment and generates dust and noise, it is selected in cases where it is difficult to consider the surrounding environment. Additionally, SP-3 may be used for surface preparation when correcting partially damaged paint. While it is a convenient method that does not require equipment, it cannot remove firmly adhered rust, mill scale, or paint films.

Regarding substrate adjustment using electric tools【ISO St3】.

St3 removes loosely adhering contaminants (such as oil, dirt, rust, and oxides) visible to the naked eye, but firmly adhered contaminants are acceptable.

"ISO St3 Work Method" 1. Remove any slag or other contaminants adhering to the surface. 2. Use solvents to remove oils, greases, and other substances adhering to the surface. 3. Use power tools to remove weakly adhered hazardous substances from the surface. 4. For areas where power tools cannot be used, use hand tools for processing. 5. Remove dust and debris with clean, dry air. "ISO St3 Precautions" Work-related hazards - Since power tools will be used, it is necessary to wear appropriate protective gear and take fire prevention measures due to the generation of sparks. Post-work painting process - The treated surface becomes reactive and rust can form in a short time, so painting must be done promptly. - Areas that cannot be processed with power tools, such as corners and complex structures, need to be treated using hand tools as well. - Compare with photos in the ISO visual book to determine the success or failure of the processing. At Harada Iron Works, we also handle surface preparation for St3, but since there may be insufficient cleanliness and adhesion with St3 surface preparation, we generally recommend surface preparation by blasting.
