[Labor Accident Case] Organic Solvent Poisoning in a Metal Product Cleaning Device

Introducing a case of organic solvent poisoning during non-regular operations in a metal product cleaning device.

While a basket was rotating in the washing tank of the cleaning device, it came loose, causing the products being cleaned to scatter inside the tank. A worker entered the cleaning device to pick up the scattered products. However, since they entered while there was still about half of the cleaning solution remaining, they inhaled the vapor of dichloromethane contained in the cleaning solution and were exposed. The worker lost consciousness after inhaling the vapor and was found in a state caught on a hanger inside the cleaning device by the cleaning operator, who rescued them. They were diagnosed with dichloromethane poisoning by a doctor and took 15 days off work. 【Suggestions】 ■ Measuring gas concentration is effective for confirming adequate ventilation. ■ Using a personal PID monitor for chemical risk assessment is recommended. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

[Labor Accident Case] Poisoning due to fuel depletion of the ventilation system

We will introduce a case of poisoning due to fuel depletion of the ventilation system during waterproof coating work inside the water distribution tank.

Two workers used a mixture of epoxy resin and hardener as a topcoat for waterproofing the inner wall of the water distribution tank. During the work, they operated a ventilation system and wore organic solvent respirators. However, the generator used to operate the ventilation system stopped blowing air due to fuel consumption, and the absorption canisters of the respirators had exceeded their breakthrough time, leading to an incident. The next day, two workers were found collapsed inside the tank by their colleagues. After being rescued, both regained consciousness but were diagnosed with organic solvent poisoning and required hospitalization for treatment. [Recommendations] - Use gas detectors to confirm the effectiveness of ventilation. - Work while checking safety with portable gas monitors. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.*
