【Technical Trivia】What is infrared?
Infrared is something we often hear about in our daily lives, but what exactly is it? Here, we will briefly explain it from the perspective of infrared heaters.
Infrared is referred to as "Infrared" in English. This term combines the prefix "Infra," meaning "below," and "red," which means "red." In fact, infrared is a type of electromagnetic wave that is located just outside (to the side of) the "red" part of the "visible light" that we usually see. The diagram above shows the types of electromagnetic waves, with the numbers on the scale indicating the wavelengths of these waves. As you can see, electromagnetic waves are classified into categories such as radio waves for mobile phones, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, etc., based on their wavelengths. The range of 10^-3 to 10^-6 (0.7um to 1,000um) corresponds to infrared. You can see that the color red, which is part of visible light, is next to it, and this helps explain why it is called "infrared."
