Lead-free and cadmium-free copper alloys that comply with regulations on the content of substances such as lead and cadmium! They can also be used as an alternative to stainless steel, leveraging their second characteristic of strength.

"Ecobras" is a lead-free copper alloy that does not use lead. It is a groundbreaking high-performance material that serves as an alternative to conventional lead-containing free-cutting brass, while simultaneously solving issues related to stress corrosion cracking and dezincification. ● Excellent machinability In conventional free-cutting brass (C3604), lead within the metal structure improves machinability. In Ecobras, the addition of silicon forms κ and γ layers, which helps to fragment chips and enhance machinability. ● High strength comparable to stainless steel The tensile strength of Ecobras is 600 N/mm². It is a high-strength material comparable to stainless steel SUS304, with 1.4 times the strength of conventional brass materials. Tohoku University Technology: Titanium alloy for biomedical application: T19-802

High antibacterial property, biocompatibility and a low Young's modulus close to the cortical bone

 A requirement for biocompatible Ti alloy for orthopedic implants is to suppress stress shielding, which occurs because of the large difference between Young’s moduli of the prosthetic stem and the cortical bone (10–30 GPa). Meanwhile, conventional autoclave sterilization before implant exhibits the discoloration and heaviest particulate contamination, and some multiple sterilization regimens for metallic materials may pose serious biological concerns.  The present invention can provide the necessary functions to a Ti implant material without impairing the low Young's modulus of Ti alloy. It possesses high antibacterial properties with a high antibacterial activity value above 2.0 from the antibacterial test (JIS R 1702) and osseointegration fromhydroxyapatite formation on the surface of Ti alloy in simulated body fluid.

Alloy that does not stop reaction during the process and continues to produce only hydrogen

Hydrogen is attracting attention as a sustainable energy source, but all current hydrogen generation methods, such as water electrolysis or steam reforming of fossil fuel, have an important environmental impact. The "hydrolysis" which generates hydrogen by reacting metallic material with water, is attracting attention as a hydrogen generation method with a small environmental impact. The advantage of the hydrolysis is that it does not generate oxygen but only hydrogen, so the oxygen separation process is not necessary and there is no risk of explosion.  Hydrogen generating materials consisting of Mg or Mg alloy have been reported as material for hydrolysis, but the phase which does not react with water such as Mg(OH)2 is formed and the reaction stops in the middle of the reaction process. Therefore, most of the previously reported hydrogen generating materials have a small hydrogen generation per unit weight.  This invention is about the hydrogen generating alloy that does not stop reaction even inside neutral aqueous solution. This alloy generates a large amount of hydrogen per unit weight because it reacts with water until the end without stopping the reaction in the middle. Moreover, the alloy is composed only of Mg and Ca elements, which are present in large quantity on Earth and are not toxic to the ecosystem. There are very few hydrogen generating materials that do not generate heavy metal ions through hydrolysis, and this alloy has potential to use in any location.

Tohoku University Technology: High-Strength Co-Based Metallic Glass Alloy: T06-003

It is an alloy with high glass-forming ability (capable of φ14mm), high machinability, and high strength (with a compressive strength of over 4000 MPa).

Metallic glass alloys, unlike conventional crystalline metals, predominantly consist of alloys that do not exhibit plastic elongation in tensile tests. Even in compositions that do show plastic elongation, they only demonstrate about 2-3% elongation, resulting in very little ductility under uniaxial stress. Therefore, plastic processing such as rolling or forging, which is common with conventional crystalline metals, is difficult. Furthermore, metallic glass alloys have higher strength compared to regular metals, with some alloys reaching up to 5000 MPa, and they cannot be said to have good machinability compared to materials like steel. However, metallic glass alloys exhibit a characteristic where the viscosity of the material sharply decreases above the glass transition temperature, allowing for various processing techniques (viscous flow processing) in the supercooled liquid region. By utilizing viscous flow, these materials can achieve excellent machinability. The present invention relates to Co-based metallic glass alloys that combine good machinability, high strength, and high glass-forming ability.

In recent years, with the progress of aging, biomaterials that can substitute for bodily functions have garnered significant attention. Co-Cr-Mo based alloys, used as biomaterials, play an important role as materials for artificial joints due to their excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance compared to other metal materials. Many of these are cast alloys standardized by ASTM F75, but generally, cast materials often have coarse microstructures and include casting defects, resulting in poor strength and ductility. Therefore, it is necessary to improve mechanical properties through microstructural control using plastic processing and heat treatment. This invention has made it possible to provide a Co-Cr-Mo based alloy with high strength, high ductility, and high fatigue strength as a biomaterial. The alloy contains specific compositions of Co/Cr/Mo/N and is characterized by fine crystal grain structure and a high density of dislocations. Through skillful composition and microstructural control, it is possible to achieve a balance of high strength, high ductility, and high fatigue strength that surpasses conventional Co-Cr-Mo based alloys.

Tohoku University Technology: CuO-added Biocompatible Ti Alloy: T24-104

Titanium (Ti) alloys are widely used in the medical field due to their lightweight, non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, and biocompatible properties. However, Ti has low antibacterial properties, making it prone to bacterial infections when used in dental implants, and it also has low resistance to inflammation, leading to rapid progression once an infection occurs. Additionally, there are concerns about limited durability due to insufficient strength, and the manufacturing of dental implants, for example, requires multi-stage processing, which is costly. This invention confirms that samples made from Ti-CuO composite powder through additive manufacturing exhibit excellent mechanical properties and antibacterial characteristics. The improvement in mechanical properties is attributed to the solid solution strengthening element O, while the enhancement of antibacterial properties is believed to result from the rapid cooling and solidification by laser during additive manufacturing, which prevents the formation of coarse Ti-Cu intermetallic compounds due to the supersaturation of Cu.

The "NAS 604PH" is a Co-based precipitation hardening alloy that achieves excellent spring material properties such as high strength, high elastic modulus, high corrosion resistance, non-magnetic characteristics, high heat resistance, and good workability due to the balance of Ni, Cr, and Mo components. The permeability is 1.01 or less, making it non-magnetic.
