The Mystery of Noise: Why Quiet Places Can Be Unsettling

"Too quiet a place can actually be unsettling." Explanation of its application to soundproofing construction.

Remote work has become completely ingrained in our lives, and working outside of the office has become the norm. In such situations, it's easy to think that "a quiet place allows for better concentration," but if it's too quiet, our nerves can become overly sensitive, making it harder to focus. By the way, the sound level in quiet places like libraries is around 40dB. A quiet office is about 50dB, and a café is around 60dB. Having moderate background noise helps to block out unnecessary sounds that can disrupt concentration. In this blog, we discuss the reasons why quiet places can actually be unsettling. We invite you to read it. *For more details, you can view the related links. *For more information, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Do you know how to properly explain the "frequency" that you somewhat understand?

What is "frequency" in the first place? Here is a table summarizing the frequency ranges of easily imaginable musical instruments.

Fortunately, we receive various inquiries about soundproofing at the Environmental Space every day. One question we always ask is, "What sound (source) do you want to soundproof?" Why? Isn't it enough to just want soundproofing for some reason? The truth is that different sounds have their own characteristics, and these characteristics affect the methods and levels of soundproofing measures. In other words, by specifically identifying the sound source, we can clarify the "volume" and "frequency" of the sound, allowing us to create a plan that achieves the desired soundproofing. There are terms like radio frequency, "low frequency," and "high frequency," and while you might have a general image of them, you may not fully understand what they mean... For those of you, this blog will discuss "frequency." [Content] ■ It's a bit late, but what exactly is "frequency"? ■ How much does frequency differ depending on the instrument? *For more details, you can view the related links. *For more information, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

What is the loudest sound in the world? Its surprising effects as well.

A simple explanation of how loud familiar sounds are! Introducing sound pressure levels that people perceive as "loud."

In this blog, we are discussing "the loudest sound in the world." The sound pressure level that people generally perceive as "loud" is around 70dB (decibels) or higher. Additionally, for every increase of 10dB, the human ear perceives the sound as being twice as loud. This means that while the difference between 30dB and 40dB and the difference between 100dB and 110dB are both numerically the same at 10dB, they are perceived to be quite different in terms of sensation. It is said that around 100dB, signs of auditory dysfunction, such as pain, begin to appear, and the threshold for tolerable pain is approximately 130dB. *For more details, you can view the related links. *For more information, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Recommended for liberal arts students! Learn about the performance values of soundproof rooms from the meanings of words!

We will explain the performance figures of soundproof rooms in a way that is easy to understand, even for those who are not good with numbers!

There are several key figures that cannot be overlooked when discussing soundproofing. However, many people find numbers challenging. Therefore, in this blog, we will focus on the theme of "understanding the performance values of soundproof rooms through the meanings of words," and we would like to explain the following three particularly important figures. "D value," "L value (LL, LH)," and "N value (NC value)." It may be a bit lengthy, but please stay with us until the end. [Content] ■ Measuring sound insulation performance… D value: the numerical value of sound insulation grade "D" ■ Measuring floor impact sound… L value: the numerical value of sound insulation grade "L" ■ Measuring indoor noise levels… N value/NC value: the numerical value of noise grade "N" *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links. *For further details, please check the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Why do people get irritated by sounds?

I think everyone has experienced frustration due to sound at least once. I will talk about sound and stress.

Due to spending more time at home, both those who make noise and those who are subjected to it have undoubtedly become more sensitive to sound. With schools being closed for an extended period, some people are constantly concerned about the sounds of children's voices and footsteps. Others, who may still be working from home, have started to desire a quieter environment where they can concentrate, even just a little. In this context, a very unfortunate incident stemming from noise from a neighbor has occurred, which I believe everyone is aware of through the news. I think many people have been accumulating stress due to the uncertainty of life with requests to refrain from going out and business closures. Indeed, crime is never acceptable, but I believe everyone has experienced frustration due to noise at least once. In this blog, we will discuss sound and stress. Please take a moment to read it. [Content] ■ The perception of sound differs from person to person ■ Why sounds seem louder when you're trying to sleep... *For more details, you can view the related links. *For more information, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Design and construction of soundproofing, acoustic environments, and spatial design <Presentation of construction case studies>

Over 4,000 construction achievements. Balancing soundproofing, acoustics, and design. Active in a wide range of facilities, from concert halls to private residences, hospitals, educational institutions, and offices.

Our company specializes in creating spatial designs that realize an invisible "sound environment" according to our customers' ideals in a "space and environment where no two things are the same." Through sound insulation performance measurements and floor impact sound measurements, we quantify not only noise but also living sounds and other invisible elements, clearly explaining the "design of sound wavelengths" in an understandable way, and providing clear proposals on how to solve sound-related issues based on the laws of physical chemistry. While pursuing knowledge and measurement techniques as sound experts, we also focus on communication, providing sound environments tailored to the needs of each individual customer. **Features** - Our measurement specialists quantify sound and plan in an easily understandable manner as staff registered in the measurement business. We support the domestic sound environment, which is lagging compared to Europe and the United States. - We possess unique know-how as a rare company capable of consistent responses from measurement to spatial design and construction, offering custom specifications in a non-stop manner, addressing each individual. - We have a track record of constructing over 4,000 sound environments, including studios, concert halls, hospital and educational facility spatial designs, and noise countermeasures for factories.

Soundproof room for scientific experiments [Made of steel, fire-resistant, and highly durable]

Combines easy construction and fire resistance. Soundproof room for scientific experiments <disassembly and reassembly possible>.

This soundproof room is adopted by research laboratories in universities and research institutions, as well as development departments in companies. Since the installation environment often involves limited space and requires considerations for disaster prevention, simple construction and non-combustibility are required. Additionally, researchers frequently move between research institutions, making it important for the laboratory to be disassembled and reassembled. This soundproof room is constructed using panels for the floor, walls, ceiling, and doors that are pre-manufactured in the factory and then assembled on-site. All parts are made of steel, ensuring high non-combustibility and durability, meeting the aforementioned performance requirements. Depending on the size, the panel jointing work on-site takes almost one day, and even including other tasks such as electromagnetic shielding work, it can be completed in about two days. For more details, please download the PDF.

Soundproof room malie <Marine trial operation data>

Noise regulations for ships resolved with soundproof rooms! Introducing the noise level measurement results from Deck B.

We would like to introduce the sea trial data for the 'Soundproof Room Malie' handled by Akasaka Iron Works Co., Ltd. In July 2018, the soundproof room Malie was installed on a vessel subject to noise regulations. The noise reduction effect of this product was confirmed during the sea trial. The measurement results of the B deck noise level at 82% load showed that the product installed on the port side was approximately 5 decibels quieter than the general noise control room located at a symmetrical position on the starboard side. (This corresponds to about 1/3 of the acoustic energy ratio.) 【Measurement Results】 ■ Approximately 5 decibels quieter than the general noise control room (about 1/3 of the acoustic energy ratio) *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
