basic information
【Lecture Overview】 The construction of the New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita Airport), which began with a cabinet decision in July 1966, led to the largest post-war residents' movement, known as the "Narita Airport Issue," due to the unilateral methods employed by those in charge of its construction. A turning point in this long-standing issue, which caused significant sacrifices, came in 1991 with the holding of a public discussion called the "Narita Airport Issue Symposium - Round Table Conference," involving some of the opposition and the government and public corporations. As a result of this conference's conclusions, the subsequent airport construction transformed into a project based on coexistence and mutual prosperity with the surrounding areas. Currently, a massive project referred to as the "Second Opening Project," which includes the development of a new runway to meet the increasing demand for air travel, is steadily progressing. It is rare to see the shadows of the airport issue that once swept through this region... Why is that? I would like to introduce the current state of a large public policy that walks together with the community under a thorough democratic process, while reflecting on the past of authoritarian airport construction as a lesson. 【Lecture Topics】 ■ History of the Narita Airport Issue ■ Second Opening Project ■ Related Q&A ■ Business card exchange and networking event (for on-site participants only)
