We would like to introduce a case study of a demonstration experiment conducted in collaboration with a certain railway company aimed at improving the flow of people within the station. The company faced congestion on the escalators during rush hours, and measures were needed to ensure a safe and efficient flow of people. The challenge was to disperse the users concentrated on the escalators and promote the use of stairs to improve the overall flow within the station. To alleviate congestion within the station, a real-time people counting system utilizing IoT sensors and a PLC system was implemented. As a result, an increase in stair usage and improvement in flow were confirmed, demonstrating an effect in reducing excessive reliance on escalators.
