The paint hardens over time, forming a coating that protects the surface. The thickness of the coating is referred to as film thickness.
"What is film thickness?" Film thickness refers to "the thickness of the coating film after the paint has fully cured," and is expressed in the unit of μ/µm (microns/micrometers). 1μm = 0.001mm, which is an extremely fine unit. In general machine painting, at Harada Ironworks, the following film thicknesses are common: For primer only: 15µm to 75µm Up to topcoat: 300µm to 500µm The degree of reduction varies depending on the type of paint and the environment in which it is used, but film thickness gradually wears down each year and decreases. Therefore, a film thickness of just 10μm or 100μm can significantly change the durability. However, it is not simply the case that a thicker film is better! Each type of paint has a specified film thickness at which its protective capabilities are maximally exhibited (refer to the paint specifications from each manufacturer). The best approach is to form a coating film with an appropriate thickness that is neither too thick nor too thin! It is extremely important not only to paint but also to manage the film thickness properly and maintain it within the appropriate values! At Harada Ironworks, we have painted many products under strict film thickness management. If you have any concerns regarding painting, please feel free to consult us.

basic information
"If the film thickness greatly exceeds the specified thickness..." Excessively thick film can lead to poor curing of the paint, as well as causes such as cracking and peeling. If the paint peels off or does not cure properly after application, it defeats the purpose. "If the film thickness is significantly below the specified thickness..." Naturally, if the film is too thin, the protective performance of the paint cannot be fully realized. There is a high possibility that it will fall far short of the originally anticipated durability. "Method for measuring film thickness" A device called a "film thickness gauge" is used to measure the film thickness. The thickness of the dried paint film is measured to check if it is at the appropriate thickness. Since it is a precision instrument, calibration should be performed before use, and measurement should be conducted thoroughly. "Method for adjusting film thickness" After each painting process, once the paint has fully cured, the film thickness is measured with the film thickness gauge. Achieving a uniform film thickness on products with complex shapes is not easy even for skilled painters, and variations will inevitably occur at different measurement points. To eliminate these variations in film thickness, areas that are too thick should be reduced with sandpaper, while areas that are too thin should be supplemented with touch-ups or similar methods.
