Painting method to prevent SS400 from rusting for a long time.
What is SS400? In JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), there is a specification for rolled steel materials known as general structural rolled steel. General structural rolled steel is represented by the material symbol SS, and since the minimum tensile strength is 400 MPa, it is called "SS400." It is widely used across various fields, making it a steel material that is abundant in supply and inexpensive to obtain. It is characterized by being easy to machine and weld, and it has high versatility. On the other hand, it is a relatively soft material among steels, making it difficult to use in areas that require high strength, and it is prone to rust, necessitating anti-rust treatment. Therefore, some form of rust prevention treatment is required. Additionally, during the manufacturing process of the steel, the surface becomes covered with "scale" (mill scale) formed by the combination of high temperatures and oxygen, and if the scale is not removed, the anti-rust treatment will not last long. There are two methods for removing scale: "pickling" and "blasting," with "blasting" being superior for preventing rust over a longer period. By completely removing all foreign substances like scale through blasting and applying anti-rust treatment to the formed surface, SS400 can resist rust for an extended period.

basic information
"Methods to Prevent Rust" SS400 is a material that is prone to rusting, so it can easily develop rust if left untreated. Except for products where rust is not an issue, rust prevention treatments are generally applied before use. The widely used rust prevention methods include plating, blackening, and painting. Blackening tends to have low rust prevention capability and is inexpensive, while painting has high rust prevention capability but is more costly. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the choice of treatment method should consider the environment in which it will be used and its expected lifespan. "Methods for Removing Scale" There are two methods for removing scale. 1. "Acid Pickling with Strong Acids like Sulfuric Acid or Hydrochloric Acid" This method dissolves surface scale, rust, and oil using the power of acid. A significant advantage is that it can treat complex shapes as long as they can be submerged in the liquid. It is generally performed as a pretreatment before plating. 2. "Blasting with Particles to Abrade the Surface" This method can remove all foreign substances (scale, rust, paint film, dirt, oil, etc.) adhered to the surface. By completely exposing the metal substrate and creating surface irregularities, it also improves adhesion, making it the most effective treatment method. It is generally performed as a pretreatment before painting.
