◆Types of Penetrating Concrete Surface Hardening Agents 1. Sodium Silicate Type This is the most common type, used for many years with a proven track record. It can be applied not only to newly poured concrete but also to older concrete with a high porosity. However, it is prone to efflorescence, so wet cleaning is necessary during the application process. After application, it takes time to crystallize, gradually developing a glossy finish. Lithium Silicate Type This type has become popular in the last decade and is suitable for concrete with low porosity, primarily used for newly constructed dense concrete. The raw materials are expensive, making lithium silicate products more costly than sodium silicate products. ◆Seal Hard Since its introduction in Japan in 1994, this sodium silicate-based penetrating concrete surface hardener has a proven track record and still boasts top-level dustproof and wear resistance. While the product itself has high strengthening performance, it is prone to efflorescence as a side effect, so it is necessary to apply it appropriately according to the concrete conditions on site. ◆Chem Hard This is a basic sodium silicate-based hardener with fundamental dustproof and wear resistance. ◆Lion Hard This is a lithium silicate-based hardener. It is suitable for use on colored concrete and in areas exposed to rain, as there is no risk of efflorescence. For any of these types, it is essential to understand their characteristics and to carry out proper application; simply applying them will not yield sufficient results. For the three products mentioned above, as well as other products, it is essential to perform wet cleaning as a common preparatory treatment before application of penetrating hardeners. If substances such as laitance or dust remain on the surface, which hinder the penetration of the hardener, the hardener applied or sprayed to penetrate the floor surface will be wasted on these hindering substances and will not penetrate properly. When selecting products and contractors, it is effective to confirm the presence or absence of "wet cleaning" in the construction specifications.
